Chapter Fifteen
LENNOX
The morning had been spent packing and getting the details for the next convention. Simon offered to take care of it all when he and Zane decided to go for a walk. Zane had wanted to get some pictures of things when it wasnât as busy, and Simon had some shopping he wanted to do. It gave me time to call my parents and touch base with them.
âHow are you doing, pumpkin?â my dad asked.
âGood. Iâm experiencing so many new things. I never realized how much I was missing out on.â
âIâm glad that youâre getting out there. Your mom never wanted you to stay home the way you did.â
âI know.â I rubbed my forehead, knowing Iâd taken on too much because of my motherâs illness.
At the time, it had felt necessary. But now, even I could admit it had become an unintentional crutch. Noah was a teenager, and Mom was doing so much better on her new medication. She was aware of her triggers, and we had enough support in place to help her.
I spent a few more minutes telling my dad about SIT, the places weâd seen so far, and the amazing food Iâd gotten to try. I conveniently left out the person whoâd stolen my wallet. No need to worry my dad.
âThatâs so good, pumpkin. I miss you and love you lots. Hereâs your brother. He wants to talk to you.â
âOkay, Dad. Love you.â I air-kissed the phone before he handed it over to my little brother. Noahâs face came into view, and I instantly smiled bigger.
âHey, Sis. Guess what?â He smiled at me, wiggling his eyebrows in excitement.
âWhat?â I made a funny face at him while I waited.
âI got first place at robotics camp.â
âWhat? You did! Thatâs awesome!â
Noah went on to tell me how he made his robot and the fight they had. When I got off the phone a while later, Slade stood against the wall, watching me.
âYou miss them.â
I nodded, wiping away a little tear. âI do, but not like I thought I would. I guess being in Nashville helped. I got used to not being there for every little thing. I still miss not knowing things the instant they happen, but it doesnât mean Iâm not included or important. Iâm getting to have my own experiences just as they are.â
Slade walked over, scooping me into his arms and sitting back on the bed with me in his lap. I laid my head on his chest, finding my favorite spot. He kissed my hair, sighing contentedly as we sat there.
âIâm glad that youâre here, Peach. Itâs also been good for me to remember how fun it can be to do things.â
âI couldnât imagine doing any of them without yâall.â
âYou could, but Iâm glad you arenât.â
We sat for a few minutes before I broached the topic heâd been avoiding. âYou nervous about seeing your dad⦠or meeting his girlfriend?â I asked, tilting my head slightly so I could see his face.
Slade blew out a breath, dropping his eyes to mine.
