Chapter Fifteen

LENNOX

The morning had been spent packing and getting the details for the next convention. Simon offered to take care of it all when he and Zane decided to go for a walk. Zane had wanted to get some pictures of things when it wasn’t as busy, and Simon had some shopping he wanted to do. It gave me time to call my parents and touch base with them.

“How are you doing, pumpkin?” my dad asked.

“Good. I’m experiencing so many new things. I never realized how much I was missing out on.”

“I’m glad that you’re getting out there. Your mom never wanted you to stay home the way you did.”

“I know.” I rubbed my forehead, knowing I’d taken on too much because of my mother’s illness.

At the time, it had felt necessary. But now, even I could admit it had become an unintentional crutch. Noah was a teenager, and Mom was doing so much better on her new medication. She was aware of her triggers, and we had enough support in place to help her.

I spent a few more minutes telling my dad about SIT, the places we’d seen so far, and the amazing food I’d gotten to try. I conveniently left out the person who’d stolen my wallet. No need to worry my dad.

“That’s so good, pumpkin. I miss you and love you lots. Here’s your brother. He wants to talk to you.”

“Okay, Dad. Love you.” I air-kissed the phone before he handed it over to my little brother. Noah’s face came into view, and I instantly smiled bigger.

“Hey, Sis. Guess what?” He smiled at me, wiggling his eyebrows in excitement.

“What?” I made a funny face at him while I waited.

“I got first place at robotics camp.”

“What? You did! That’s awesome!”

Noah went on to tell me how he made his robot and the fight they had. When I got off the phone a while later, Slade stood against the wall, watching me.

“You miss them.”

I nodded, wiping away a little tear. “I do, but not like I thought I would. I guess being in Nashville helped. I got used to not being there for every little thing. I still miss not knowing things the instant they happen, but it doesn’t mean I’m not included or important. I’m getting to have my own experiences just as they are.”

Slade walked over, scooping me into his arms and sitting back on the bed with me in his lap. I laid my head on his chest, finding my favorite spot. He kissed my hair, sighing contentedly as we sat there.

“I’m glad that you’re here, Peach. It’s also been good for me to remember how fun it can be to do things.”

“I couldn’t imagine doing any of them without y’all.”

“You could, but I’m glad you aren’t.”

We sat for a few minutes before I broached the topic he’d been avoiding. “You nervous about seeing your dad… or meeting his girlfriend?” I asked, tilting my head slightly so I could see his face.

Slade blew out a breath, dropping his eyes to mine.
